We are recruiting a Ph.D. student starting in Fall 2027 to work on AI and machine learning for engineering design. Ideal candidates will have strong foundations in mathematics and programming. Applicants with experience or strong interest in one or more of the following areas are especially encouraged to apply:
- Interpretable machine learning
- Uncertainty quantification
- Deep generative models
- LLMs and other foundation models
- Inverse design, generative design, or related computational design topics
Students from mechanical engineering, computer science, industrial engineering, and related fields are welcome to apply. Strong applicants should be interested in developing AI and machine learning methods for engineering design, not only in applying generic AI models.
Our group focuses primarily on developing generalizable design methodologies rather than optimizing for a single application domain. While we often use applications such as engineered materials, structural design, mechanical systems, or manufacturing as testbeds, the central research goal is to create methods that can transfer across design problems.
